Industry News: Parliament delays POPI to 2016

Like most people we have been waiting for confirmation on the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPI) commencement date. So far no clear indication of the POPI timeline has been communicated by Parliament or the Minister since POPI became law in 2013. Parliament must now appoint an Information Regulator. Candidates were nominated by 14 August 2015, yet no appointment has been made yet. Since then Parliament asked for a meeting to discuss the role of the Information Regulator, which meeting was held on the 11th of November 2015. The outcome of the meeting was that Parliament asked for another workshop to be set up next year for all relevant stakeholders. This means that POPI will only commence in 2016.

WorkPool Server Installation Disk (ISO) for self-managed servers

We have recently released an updated version of our WorkPool Server Installation disk to ensure our server platform remains current, secure and in line with changes in the industry. Our WorkPool Server environment is based on Ubuntu 14.04 LTS and the new installation disk includes updates to core components, security patches and enhancements as well as performance improvements. A link to the installation disk can be provided on request. This release does not impact and Cloud users as your server will be migrated by our support team.

Please Note: Keeping your systems updated and applying the latest security patches is not only recommended but forms part of good I.T. governance and “best practices”. If you are not a WorkPool Cloud user, then please inform your I.T. service provider about this release so it can be considered and incorporated as part of your planning going forward, including fees associated with ongoing maintenance efforts, backups, uninterrupted power supplies, etc. Due to the load shedding situation in South Africa there has been an unavoidable increase in costs for supporting, managing or maintaining self-managed server environments.
